Tottori Prefecture (鳥取県) is one of the prefectures in the Chugoku Region facing the Sea of Japan. It is the least populated prefecture in Japan and is full of nature such as mountains and the sea. Tottori Sand Dune (鳥取砂丘) is the largest sand dune in Japan that can be visited and is designated as a national natural monument.
Tottori Prefecture is divided into the following 3 areas.
- Tottori (鳥取) Area
- Yonago (米子), Sakaiminato (境港), Daisen (大山) Area
- Kurayoshi (倉吉), Misasa (三朝) Area
Tottori Area
Tottori City is the prefectural capital of Tottori prefecture. Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘) is famous as a tourist destination in this area. It is the largest sand dunes you can visit in Japan and has been designated as a national natural treasure.
Yonago, Sakaiminato, Daisen Area
Sakaiminato City (境港市) is famous as a port city as its name suggests. It is also known as the hometown of the author of the Japanese manga “GeGeGe no Kitaro (ゲゲゲの鬼太郎)”, and there are many attractions about the manga and the author in the city.
Kurayoshi, Misasa Area
Misasa Onsen (三朝温泉) in this area is known as one of the leading hot spring areas in the Chugoku region. Many buildings from the Edo and Meiji eras remain in the white wall warehouses in Kurayoshi, and you can feel the old Japan.
